Smoking on a Cruise: Rules for AIDA, Mein Schiff, MSC & More
Planning a cruise and wondering where youβre allowed to smoke on board? The rules vary significantly between cruise lines β and change frequently. Smoking on the balcony, vaping on deck, IQOS in your cabin? This guide summarises the current policies for 2024/2025 and offers practical tips for smokers at sea.
Smoking on AIDA: Designated Areas & Balcony Rules
AIDA Cruises has clear guidelines: smoking is permitted exclusively in specially marked smoking areas on deck. These typically include one or two zones on the outer decks, usually near the bars.
- 1Balcony: Smoking on your private balcony has been strictly prohibited on AIDA since 2023. Violations can result in a fine or even disembarkation at your own expense.
- 2Cabin: All cabins are non-smoking β no exceptions. There are no designated smoker cabins.
- 3Restaurants & interior spaces: Smoking is completely banned in all indoor areas, including the casino.
- 4E-cigarettes & IQOS: Treated the same as conventional cigarettes on AIDA β only permitted in designated smoking areas.
Mein Schiff: Balcony & Smoking Areas
TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff) follows a similarly restrictive approach to AIDA. Since the fleet renewal, uniform rules apply across all ships:
- βBalcony: Smoking on the balcony is generally prohibited. This applies to all cabin types, including suites.
- βSmoking areas: Each ship has one or two designated outdoor areas, often on deck 15 or near the sports bar.
- βCigars & pipes: Only permitted in the designated smoking zones.
- βShisha: Bringing and smoking hookah/water pipes on board is prohibited.
MSC, Costa & Other Cruise Lines
International cruise lines handle smoking policies differently. Here is an overview of the major operators:
MSC Cruises
MSC allows smoking in designated outdoor areas and in the casino (when open). Balconies are non-smoking. Some ships feature a cigar lounge. E-cigarettes are only permitted in smoking areas.
Costa Cruises
Costa permits smoking exclusively in marked areas on deck. Cabins and balconies are smoke-free. E-cigarettes are treated the same as conventional cigarettes.
Royal Caribbean & Norwegian
Smoking only in outdoor areas and partly in the casino. Balconies strictly non-smoking. Norwegian charges up to $250 for violations.
E-Cigarettes & IQOS on a Cruise
Many smokers hope that e-cigarettes or tobacco heaters like IQOS will give them more freedom on board. The reality, however, is different:
- βAIDA, Mein Schiff, Costa: E-cigarettes and IQOS are treated like regular cigarettes. Only permitted in smoking areas.
- βMSC: Treated the same as conventional cigarettes. No vaping in cabins or on balconies.
- βRoyal Caribbean: E-cigarettes are allowed in smoking areas but not inside the cabin.
- βNorwegian: E-cigarettes may only be used in smoking areas. Vaping on the balcony results in a cleaning fee.
Important
Cabin smoke detectors react to vapour and aerosol just as they do to smoke. A false alarm can result in a fine and, if repeated, removal from the voyage.
Tips for Smokers on a Cruise

Frequently Asked Questions
Is smoking allowed on an AIDA balcony?
No. Since 2023 a strict ban on balcony smoking applies across all AIDA ships. Violations risk a fine and, in extreme cases, early disembarkation. Smoking is only permitted in the designated outdoor areas on deck.
Are there smoking cabins on cruise ships?
No. None of the major cruise lines (AIDA, Mein Schiff, MSC, Costa, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian) still offer smoking cabins. All cabins β including suites β have been entirely smoke-free for several years. This rule also applies to e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters.
Can I use IQOS on a cruise?
IQOS and other tobacco heaters are treated like conventional cigarettes on virtually all cruise ships. This means they may only be used in the designated smoking areas on deck. IQOS is prohibited in cabins, on balconies, and in all indoor spaces. Cabin smoke detectors react to the aerosol and will trigger an alarm.
βA cruise can be the ideal occasion to quit smoking: a new environment, clear rules, and plenty of distractions.β
